Ghana ist kurz nach meiner Ankunft von einem „low wage country“ zu einem „middle income country“ aufgestuft worden. Das bedeutet im weitesten Sinne, dass es in vielen Ländern auf der Welt mit der Gesundheitsversorgung nicht so gut steht wie in Ghana. Ich bin demnach froh, I'm sick in Ghana and in no other country. In kleinen Communities werden z.B. an Tuberkulose Erkrankte aus dem Dorf geschafft und so lange mit Nahrungsmittel versorgt, bis sie gestorben sind. Das ist zwar nicht schlecht, weil sich so die Krankheit nicht ausbreiten kann. Aber in Anbetracht unserer heutigen Möglichkeiten klingt das nach Mittelalter.
Manchmal werden Erkrankte auch nicht ins Krankenhaus gebracht, weil sie kein Geld haben. Die Person wird zuhause versorgt, bis sie stirbt. Dann aber werden mehrere hunderte Cedis für die Beerdigung ausgegeben oder die Cedis in die Kirchenkollekte geworfen. Die Prioritäten werden anders gesetzt: Lieber gibt man Geld für das Jenseits, als für das Diesseits aus.
Letzte Beispiele spielen sich aber vor allem im ländlichen Raum ab, vom Fetisch , der ab und zu noch praktiziert wird, einmal abgesehen. In Accra ist das Bild völlig anders. Hier gibt es Krankenhäuser, die mit besten Standards ausgerüstet sind. Auch private Krankenhäuser haben sich etabliert.
Private Krankenhäuser - das ist ein Segen und ein Fluch zugleich. Lustigerweise besitzen manche Ärzte/Ärztinnen, die bei staatlichen Krankenhäusern angestellt sind, ein privates Krankenhaus. Da der Mensch auch in Ghana nicht zur gleichen Zeit an zwei Orten sein kann, besetzt der Arzt/ die Ärztin statt einer Vollstelle weniger als eine halbe Stelle im staatlichen Krankenhaus. Die riesigen Schlangen, die auf den Doktor warten werden dann von einem Assistenten behandelt. Der Assistent oder die Assistant is totally under-qualified for this position, but with the same responsibilities as a doctor. This is not just hearsay, but my own experience.

Then I would rather go to Accra in a private hospital. I have - through my insurance company from Germany - free choice when it comes to doctor and hospital. Those who visit a lot of money, private hospitals, because the treatment is there faster, better and more expensive. And those die nicht auf der Bright Side of Life leben, müssen sich mit dem Urteilsvermögen teils Unqualifizierter unterwerfen.
Ob das Geschriebene der objektiven Wirklichkeit entspricht, würde ich infrage stellen. In meinem Umfeld geht es den Menschen „gut“, sodass sie sich eine ärztliche Behandlung leisten sollten. Von anderen Freiwilligen, die in einem Slum in Accra arbeiten, hört man anderes. Ich muss noch viel sehen und erfahren, um mein Bild von Ghana zu konkretisieren.
